Read previewIran's attack on Israel on Saturday is bad not only for the Middle East, but also for Russia's war in Ukraine as new fault lines emerge between Moscow and Tehran. AdvertisementRussia has been installing itself as a military and diplomatic player in the Middle East for years. This is in part due to Moscow's preoccupation with its war in Ukraine, Grisé wrote. "Russia would be especially sensitive to Chinese attempts to encroach on its influence in the Middle East," Grisé wrote in her commentary. AdvertisementThis is especially so since Beijing managed to deliver results in March 2023, brokering a détente between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Grisé added.

Isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. Two sources familiar with the American information said that since November there had been a steady stream of intelligence that ISIS-K – an affiliate of ISIS that is active in Afghanistan and the surrounding region – was determined to attack Russia. Moscow has intervened tellingly in Syria’s civil war, to the support of President Bashar al-Assad and against ISIS. A US official said Friday that Washington had no reason to doubt ISIS’ claim that it was responsible for the latest attack. On Friday, following reports of the Crocus City Hall attack, the US embassy advised US citizens not to travel to Russia.

Sunday night at the 66th annual Grammy Awards, Jay-Z accepted the Dr. Dre global impact award, a sort of éminence grise prize. He’s previously won 24 Grammys, but he did not treat the moment like a homecoming. At least get it close to right.” He mentioned his wife, Beyoncé, winner of the most Grammys ever, yet never a winner for album of the year. By this point, the room seemed to understand what was happening — Jay-Z was rinsing the Grammys on its own stage. Over the past few years, several Black artists have effectively been boycotting the Grammys by declining to submit their music for consideration, frustrated with how hip-hop and R&B are treated, particularly in the biggest all-genre categories.

“I want people to see what a meaningful, happy life I’ve had with these beliefs,” says Dennett, who is 81. They’ve got trillions of motor proteins, and motor proteins are not alive. Motor proteins aren’t alive. Life couldn’t exist without these little molecular machines — by the trillions — that are working in your body right now. Human life and human consciousness are made possible by these incredibly brilliant consortia of little robots.

The US Navy is warning commercial ships to avoid traveling near Iranian territory. Iranian forces have already seized two oil tankers this year. Attacks on ships in the region have increased ever since Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal. Timothy Hawkins said ships "are being advised to transit as far away from Iranian territorial waters as possible," noting a warning issued by the US-based International Maritime Security Construct. Since 2021, Iran has "harassed, attacked, or interfered with" the navigation rights of 15 internationally flagged merchant ships, according to the US Navy.

When did Marc Jacobs, erstwhile downtown darling turned New York fashion éminence grise, become a philosopher of the modern condition? And, on Monday, in a show at the New York Public Library, a three-minute meditation on the abbreviated attention span generated by our digital lives and the looming future of A.I. Thirty seconds for the models — 29 of them — to march in one direction. Thirty more seconds to march out again in the other direction. And then a minute or so at the beginning and end for people to realize what had just gone on.

Ron DeSantis said Friday that he “had nothing to do with” a poem recently being moved from an elementary school library to a middle school library. “This is some book of poems. I had nothing to do with any of this, but it was a book of poems that was in an elementary school library and the school, or the school district determined that was more appropriate to be in the middle school library. So, they moved it from the elementary school library to the middle school library. The poem in question – Amanda Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb,” which she wrote for Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration – was removed from the elementary school section of a Miami-Dade County K-8 public school to the middle school section of the school’s media center, CNN reported last week.

Recent comments by Kanye West, now known as Ye, echo ancient antisemitic tropes, writes Tal Lavin. Over on Instagram, where I'd posted a picture of me cuddling a goat, someone commented: "Kanye West was right about you people." But these sentiments are just the tip of a much longer spear. Ye's comments in particular echo a very long history of antisemitic tropes — tropes that have left a trail of blood in their wake. On "Drink Champs" Ye spit into the mic about the evils of the "Jewish media."
